Specialization: How To Make Yourself Valuable In The Job Market

Job Search

These days, getting a job means marketing yourself really well. You need to find a way to stand out from the crowd. You can’t just point to your GPA from a top tier school or tout your problem-solving skills.

That won’t get you the job in this market. Now, you have to find a way to specialize in a narrow niche so you can get hired. By doing so, you make yourself valuable in a very specific way.

For example, you can be a jack of all trades lawyer that is always hustling for clients, or you can be the go-to guy that specializes in physician contracts like for Physicians Thrive.

There are so many benefits to finding a small area to specialize in so let’s get to the list.

Start with education

When you have either just set out on your path for education, or you are looking at the best MBA to specialize you need to have an idea of where to focus.

Look at it as if you wanted to become a doctor. You can learn to be a general practitioner or you can study to become a podiatrist. You’ll still need to go through the same curriculum in medical school but then you’ll have to do additional training in your chosen field, in this case, podiatry.

Once you do that, you’ll find yourself in high demand no matter what. Now, just about every doctor is in high demand, but this is just to make a point.

Research your field

You may be wondering how to find the right area to specialize in. This takes research. Dive in and find out where to focus within your ideal field.

Let’s go back to the lawyer analogy. Suppose you are interested in law. You should look into the types of lawyers that are scarce. Ask your professors, or call up some lawyers working in the trenches right now. They’ll tell you the areas where they see opportunity.

They might tell you that there is a shortage of lawyers working in immigration. Something like this could pose a perfect area to focus and find yourself in a rewarding and highly sought after position.

Market yourself

Now that you have settled on a specialization, you need to market yourself. If you are in private practice, you’ll need to use the same skills a company might use to drum up business and create a brand that will make you an expert in your field. When you become an expert then you will be sought out as the best in your area of expertise.

Inbound marketing is a good way to do this. You should have a website no matter what, but you should also use that site as a funnel to bring in more business. Since you have a narrow focus for your practice, you can create content around that and people will find you since they are searching for a very specific thing.
